The Evangelical Environmental Network applauds Senator Bob Casey (D, PA) for Revitalizing the Civilian Conservation Corps proposal and today’s introduction of the Restore Environmental Vitality and Improve Volatile Economy (REVIVE) by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Act. The Bible reminds us that “the land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine; with me you are but aliens and tenants. Throughout the land that you hold, you shall provide for the redemption of the land,” (Leviticus 25:23-24, NRSV).
As tenants of all creation and responsible for the earth’s redemption, we have a moral responsibility to care for our common home. Climate change’s extreme weather, non-reclaimed land from extractive industries, and polluted areas resulting from redlining are just a few of the scars upon creation and the toxic threats to humanity.
“Senator Casey’s potential legislation not only attempts to clean-up past failures and neglects by putting people back to work,” said the Rev. Mitch Hescox, President/CEO, “but this bill is pro-active, working with farmers and other private landholders to build solid conservation and carbon sequestration practices that plan for the future. As the first CCC’s restored America’s forests and built many of our National Parks, Senator Casey’s Bill moves us to a sustainable future.”
