Every child deserves to reach their God-given potential, but as communities across the country–such as East Palestine, OH; Cambria County, PA; and Washington County, KS–grapple with the fallout of contaminated water, air, and soil from toxic leaks and spills, many parents worry for their children’s health and safety. That is why the Evangelical Environmental Network applauds the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) for their proposed rule to better detect and repair methane leaks from natural gas pipelines. Natural gas pipelines are found in every corner of our community, including our homes, schools, workplaces, churches, and playgrounds. Leaking gas pipelines release air toxics, cancer-causing benzene, smog-forming compounds, and climate-warming methane pollution. By bringing monitoring practices into the 21st century, this rule–issued in response to bipartisan action in Congress–will defend the lives and health of our families and children from wasteful and dangerous gas leaks.
