Built for Community: Faith and Farming in Northwest Iowa

At KSS Farms, we believe farming is more than a profession—it’s a calling rooted in faith, friendship, and stewardship. We’re “people” people, shaped by generations of farm families and blue-collar workers who valued hard work, creativity, and community. That legacy lives on in us.

When we each began our individual farming journeys, one thing became clear: we couldn’t do it alone. Farming is demanding, and the challenges—especially around labor, sustainability, and technology—are real. But we found strength in each other. Lifelong friends and neighbors, we came together not just to share the workload, but to build something better. Today, we are KSS Farms.

We are Neil and Sandy Krummen, Nick and Mary Sennert, and Jessob and Jenna Steffen. Together, we live and farm near Linn Grove, Iowa, continuing the work our families began generations ago and stewarding the land entrusted to us. Our crops include corn, soybeans, oats, and buckwheat, along with a diverse mix of cover crops. We also raise livestock—sheep, goats, and hogs—using methods that reflect our commitment to regenerative agriculture.

Regenerative Farming Rooted in Faith

Our farming practices are guided by regenerative principles: no-till methods, cover cropping, extended rotations, and a focus on soil health. These aren’t just techniques—they’re expressions of our values. We believe the land is a gift from God, and it’s our responsibility to care for it with integrity and intention. Regenerative farming allows us to reduce synthetic inputs, improve biodiversity, and promote long-term resilience—for the soil, our families, and our community.

In 2021, we formalized our partnership to address labor shortages and streamline operations. What started as a practical solution quickly became a powerful collaboration. By merging our field operations, we were able to invest in newer, more efficient equipment and share knowledge across specialties. Neil brings mechanical expertise and operational efficiency, Jessob leads in technology and innovation, and Nick focuses on agronomy and grain marketing. Together, we’re stronger.

We’re all in our mid-30s, carrying on tradition and building lives in the same rural area where we grew up. Our shared history gives us a deep sense of place and purpose. We farm not just for profit, but for people—for our families, our neighbors, and the generations to come. We care about the work we’re doing and we are grateful for the opportunity to live this life.

As we continued our work together, it was important to put words on what we were doing and why. With that thought in mind, we developed three core principles:

  • Character: We strive to honor God, uphold integrity, and treat others with the same respect and kindness we hope to receive.
  • Conviction: Our farming practices are rooted in a deep commitment to soil health principles- caring for the land, reducing reliance on synthetic inputs, and promoting human well-being through responsible stewardship.
  • Competence: By combining our individual strengths, we create a synergy that accelerates our progress and empowers us to live out our convictions with excellence.

At KSS Farms, we’re not just growing crops—we’re growing community. We’re investing in the future of agriculture, rooted in faith and built on friendship. And we’re proud to be part of a movement that sees farming not just as a job, but as a way to serve, connect, and thrive.
